This course examines the social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainable urban development. Some of the major themes explored include indicators of sustainability, urban demographic trends, environmental justice, green building, urban sprawl, sustainable energy and transportation, and global climate change. Urban farming (also known as urban agriculture) takes advantage of every inch of private or public space and can involve anything from rooftop farming to balcony gardening, from farming in parking lots to farming along roadsides. Urban farming plays a large part in contributing to sustainable urban development. This course addresses the concepts, practices, and tools for sustainable planning and provides an understanding for how to apply these to urban communities. The course is an intensive, topics-based overview of sustainable land use, housing, transportation, infrastructure, and community and economic development practices.
